Northwest Women’s Imaging Designated as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence
Tucson, AZ (October 11, 2010) – Northwest Women’s Imaging (NWI) has been
designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of
Radiology (ACR).
By awarding facilities the status of a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, the ACR
recognizes breast imaging centers that have earned accreditation in
mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, and breast ultrasound (including
ultrasound-guided breast biopsy).
Peer-review evaluations, conducted in each of these breast imaging modalities by
board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field, have
determined that NWI has achieved high practice standards in image quality,
personnel qualifications, facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality
assurance programs.
NWI is part of Northwest Medical Center (NMC). NMC CEO Paul Kappelman says,
“This designation reinforces the quality of our breast imaging program and our
commitment to providing excellent care. However, our focus goes beyond quality
care to the overall patient experience which is at the core of what we do. We
appreciate the trust that Tucson’s women have placed in us for their imaging needs.”
Northwest Women’s Imaging is the only hospital-based imaging program in Tucson
that has received a Center of Excellence designation from ACR.
Northwest also recently added the area’s first Breast-Specific Gamma Imaging (BSGI)
technology to its imaging center. This innovative breast imaging technology can
help reveal early stages of cancer or confirm there is no cancer, meaning no more
“wait and see” for women who have had inconclusive mammogram results.
