Cardiac Rehabilitation
Physical activity is healthy for your heart—even after you've had a heart attack or bypass surgery. It's important to start out slowly, under the supervision of cardiac rehab specialists. In this video, you'll learn what's involved in cardiac rehab and how it can benefit your health in the long term. |
Northwest Medical Center's Cardiac Rehabilitation program is one of only two certified programs in Tucson. Cardiac Rehab is typically covered by most insurances.
The objective of a cardiac rehab program is to assist patients recovering from cardiac illness to return to their optimal physical and emotional well-being. You must have a referral from your physician to be admitted to the program and an exercise stress test is required to determine your current exercise capacity.
Phase One: The first phase of cardiac rehab begins in the hospital as you recover from your heart attack, percutaneous coronary intervention, bypass surgery or other heart condition. Physical activity will be resumed as you walk the hospital halls.
Phase Two: Phase two may begin as early as two weeks after discharge from the hospital, dependent upon diagnosis. This phase is usually covered by insurance and continues for 12 weeks. It consists of:
- Supervised exercise sessions three times a week
- EKG monitored exercise
- Exercise involving use of a treadmill, stationary bicycles, arm cycling, weights and stepping
- Educational instruction on various heart-related and "healthy living" subjects
- Body Mass Index (BMI)
- Diabetic glucose monitoring (if indicated)
Phase Three: Phase three continues supervised exercise aimed at maintaining a consistent healthy lifestyle. This is a self-pay program.

Phase One
If you have been hospitalized for your respiratory illness, you may begin your Pulmonary Rehabilitation while still in the hospital. Low-level activity and education are emphasized.
Phase Two
Outpatient Pulmonary Rehabilitation can begin when your physician determines you are ready for exercise and would benefit from the program.
Exercise is essential for recovery. We begin by evaluating your individual status then creating a personalized exercise program matched to your lifestyle and your rehabilitation goals. Your heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen saturation are monitored by the Pulmonary Rehabilitation staff to ensure you are exercising within safe and appropriate limits. Our exercise equipment includes:
- Treadmills
- Stationary Bicycles
- Recumbent Cycles
- Recumbent Steppers
- Arm Cycles
- Weights and Exercise Bands
Outpatient Pulmonary Rehabilitation is reimbursed by most insurance carriers.
Phase Three
Phase III is a continuation of supervised exercise aimed at maintaining a consistent healthy lifestyle. Vital signs and exercise data are recorded and progress notes are sent to your physician every six months. Insurance companies do not pay for this program. The monthly fee is based on the number of sessions you attend per week. Please contact us for our current rates.
