Prenatal Classes and Parent Support Groups

Northwest Medical Center offers a wide selection of prenatal classes for mothers and coaches. Please click here to download the 2013 Class Schedule.

Preparing for the Birth Experience
This is a five-session class for the first-time mother. Topics include:

  • What to expect during the third trimester
  • Signs of labor and how to avoid pre-term labor
  • Labor and deliver
  • Cesarean section
  • Comfort techniques
  • Newborn characteristics and hospital care
  • Choosing a pediatrician for your baby
  • The Women's Center procedures
  • Tour of The Women's Center
  • Postpartum care

A two-day "Super Saturday" Prepared Childbirth class is also available. Click to register.

Another Time Around
A refresher class for experienced expectant mothers and their coaches. A tour of The Women's Center is not included.

Now What? Owners Manual for Beginners
A one-session class to guide parents with skills for newborn care during the first three months. Topics include:

  • Normal characteristics of the newborn
  • Daily care including feeding, bathing and sleeping
  • Skills to calm your baby
  • Creating a safe environment
  • Recognizing illness and knowing when to call the doctor

Breastfeeding: A Family Affair
A one-session class taught by certified Lactation Educators. Helpful information is provided to increase each mother's understanding and confidence with breastfeeding.

Parent CPR
A two-hour class featuring pediatric CPR training.  Participants will receive the skills needed to prevent and manage emergency situations for infants and children to age eight.

OB Tour and Sibling Tour
Tour The Women's Center on Sundays, Mondays or Wednesdays. The general tour will familiarize you with our comprehensive maternity services, including the private mother/baby suites, the Level II Nursery and family waiting rooms.  The sibling tour is designed for children ages three to 10.  Parents and their children will tour the mother/baby suites and see the equipment.  Tours need to be scheduled even though this is a free service.  If scheduled tour dates do not fit your schedule, please call 877-4156 for possible arrangements to assist with a tour.  A tour of The Women's Center is included with the "Preparing for the Birth Experience" class.  No tour is offered with the "Another Time Around" class.

Birthing Naturally
A 2 1/2 hour class for women who want to learn more about delivering their babies naturally and without medication. This class should be taken early in the third trimester.

Safe Sitter
Safe SitterĀ® is a medically accurate, hands-on, class that teaches boys and girls ages 11 to 13 how to handle emergencies when caring for children. Click here to download the flyer and see upcoming dates.

Parent Support Groups
Northwest Medical Center sponsors the following community support groups for parents; all are welcome to attend:

Breast Feeding Support Group
These free meetings are open to the public every Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at 6060 N. Fountain Plaza Drive, Suite 130 - adjacent to The Women's Center. For information, call our Lactation Department at (520) 877-4145.

Mother to Mother Pregnancy and Postpartum Adjustment Support Group
Mother to Mother is a pregnancy and postpartum adjustment support group at The Women's Center. The group will provide a supportive environment for women who are having a difficult time adjusting to the challenges of pregnancy and motherhood. The support group is held on Wednesdays from 10 a.m.-11:30 a.m. at 6060 N. Fountain Plaza Drive, Suite 130 (adjacent to The Women's Center). This program is free.

Gaining Confidence: The First Year with Your Baby
This is a free program held the first and third Mondays of the month from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. (excluding holidays) at 6060 N. Fountain Plaza Drive, Suite 130 (adjacent to The Women's Center). Gaining Confidence offers an opportunity to build lasting friendships while gaining knowledge and confidence as a new parent. Participants will learn from speakers and other families as they share experiences in a playgroup-type atmosphere. This program is open to the community. We encourage you to bring your baby with you.
