I have always wished to help my fellow man and woman. My first career was as a newspaper reporter. I enjoyed meeting people from diverse backgrounds and listening to their stories. I hoped by writing my articles I could improve their lives by informing them of the condition of their world.
I eventually wanted to more directly influence and help people, so I chose enter the field of medicine. I still find communication as one of the most important skills to practice. I listen to my patients to identify their needs to develop a plan to contribute to their overall wellness. I feel if I can educate a person about an illness, I can include them in the treatment. For example, if a diabetic patient understands the cause of the illness and how the medications work, he or she can feel confident in following a treatment plan and make smarter lifestyle decisions. And that is empowering to the patient.
I like the variety of patients in primary care, and I like taking care of and getting to know whole families. I have a particular interest in diabetes and obesity since I see more of this on the rise.
I believe mutual respect to be the cornerstone of the physician-patient relationship. I treat patients as I would expect to be treated in kind.
When I am not in the office, I enjoy spending time with my family and pets. I like to exercise, go to the movies, read and travel. I practice martial arts regularly. I am proud to be a dedicated physician, father, husband, and also enjoy devoting time to my many pets.
