Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) is a surgical procedure which is performed using special instruments for small or no incisions at all. Conventional open abdominal surgeries for gynecological conditions generally require longer hospital stays, larger incisions and a longer recovery period than minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery.
The benefits of MIS typically include smaller incisions, less postoperative pain, less need for pain medication, faster recovery and quicker return to work and normal daily activities.
Because not all gynecological surgeons are fellowship trained in MIS, much gynecologic surgery is still performed using very large incisions.
Dr. Waliser believes the potential benefits of minimally invasive surgery for a patient – less pain, less scarring and a quicker recovery – outweigh traditional open surgery in almost all gynecological cases. That is why Dr. Waliser specializes in MIS.
It is important to note MIS is not necessarily minor surgery in which only local anesthesia is required. In fact, most MIS procedures still require general anesthesia to be administered beforehand. While each patient is responsible for her own body and the final treatment decision, input from the physician is a key component. Dr. Waliser enjoys spending time with his patients and guiding them through the diagnosis and treatment process, providing information, options and recommendations.
Dr. Thomas Waliser is proud to be one of a few fellowship trained minimally invasive laparoscopic gynecological surgeons in Tucson.
